Hinduism’ most incredible show of penance…
Today, thousands are about to repeat their Thaipusam Cavadi vows and chanting. Commemorating the birth anniversary of the Lord of war, Murugan as well as the day he had emerged victorious over the demon Surapadma, the Thaipoosam procession is one of the most extreme forms of religious zeal ever-known to mankind.
Pierced, hooked or skewered, devout believers usually showcase their devotion for their Lord through penance and abstinence; many bear hefty loads called kavadi out of fulfilled promises or for spiritual cleansing. There are also those who undertake the Murugan pilgrimage to seek forgiveness and to receive his Holy blessings…
Ahead of groups of seasoned onlookers, one can take note of the bunch of frenzied believers gyrating to the pulsating beats of the drums. With eyes all closed, they are seemingly wincing in pain and in discomfort but turns out they are only mentally heightened. In a trance-like state, they are apparently said to be calling out for the Lord in the view of connecting with Him mind and soul.
Children too can partake in the lively celebrations but as milk pot carriers. They could abstain from talking too, should they wish to do so. But what’s noteworthy is coming across – the youngest of all completing his or her penance in absolute fervor.
Now once at the designated halt (the chosen kovil), all carriers alike with their weights or milk pots, unburdened themselves. They are chiefly assisted by some priests who do the needful to sprinkle holy ash before any removal. This is a paramount ritual prior to removing any hook, tug or piercing for healing any sensitive area.
Eventually all rituals are deemed over when blessed milk carried along all marches nationwide are poured onto the day’s deity, the Mighty Murugan…
To all those celebrating, we wish you a pious Thaipusam Cavadi…
